A lone crimefighter battles the forces of evil with the help of a virtually indestructible and artificially intelligent supercar. Michael Long is a crimefighter who is seriously wounded during his work. Nursed back to health by a mysterious benefactor (chairman of the Knight Industries), he regains consciousness a new man with a new face and a new name: Michael Knight. His mysterious benefactor (through the guise of associate Devon Miles) provides Michael with equipment and support so that he can continue his crime fighting work. The most notable piece of equipment supplied, is "KITT", a high-performance sports car fitted with artificial intelligence. KR was an innovative series for the 80s. Despite the dated cheesy-ness of some of the episodes by today's standards, it still holds up as an entertaining show. In the beginning, KITT started out with a quiet voice and very little personality, which thankfully was changed. What I didn't like were some of his later features, such as Super Pursuit Mode or the fact he could open up standard locks from a distance. But the best thing about revisiting this show today is the fact you look at the goofy "hi-tech" dashboard KITT had and realize that today, it doesn't look as goofy. With refinement, it could resemble many cars that now possess GPS systems, CD players, digitized gauges, voice controls and so forth. KITT was really the car of the future. And I still enjoy it. I was a senior in high school when this show premiered. Yes, it is absolutely campy, and of course it is not believable, but maybe that's why I like it so much, even today. This show reminds me of Star Trek, the original series in some ways. It's so over the top that you can forget about any idea of anyone getting hurt. You know before the episode even begins that Michael is going to come through, and good will triumph over evil and the bad guy is going to get it in the end. Just like Trek. But that's what I love about it. If I wanted to see reality, I can find another show, or simply walk out the front door. But this kind of show let's you just take your mind off the hook for a while and pretend that everything always comes out right in the end. If that's what you want, you're in the right place.
